Mental Health First Aid

The Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama now has a professional staff member certified to provide Mental Health First Aid training. What is Mental Health First Aid? Mental Health First Aid is a proven international program that gives people the skills necessary to help someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Learn more about this incredible program at www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org.

Studies show that individuals trained in Mental Health First Aid:

• Grow their knowledge of signs, symptoms, and risk factors of mental illnesses;
• Can identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with a mental illness or addiction;
• Increase their confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress; and
• Show increased mental wellness themselves.

Just as CPR can help you assist someone having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid can help assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. In this course participants learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health, strategies for both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where locally to turn for mental health help.

A Mental Health First Aid class can have from 5 to 30 participants, can be provided in one day (8 instructional hours), is very low-cost, and does not have to be renewed once completed – the certification does not run out. The Mental Health Center can also provide this training at your location for convenience.
